SEL: THE NEW BUZZWORD OF THE EDUCATION INDUSTRY BUT WHY?

The recent years have witnessed a shift towards a strong focus on the Social and Emotional well-being of students and a lot of importance is given to SEL in classrooms. The question arises why is this given so much of importance and why SEL is the need of the 21st century?

We live in a stressful world and the youth of the country is constantly coping with new emotional outbursts and mental health issues which can’t be ignored. The current education system lacks self-awareness, emotional wellness coping skills and relationship training. As stated by education institutes, social and emotional abilities are the indicators of how well a person can adjust in this dynamic environment and that is why educators are primarily focusing on social and emotional learning.

Read our blog on SEL and its key competencies.

According to studies, SEL equips people with the essential tools they need to

  1. Build and maintain positive relationships

  2. Control and manage strong emotions

  3. Express empathy.

SEL helps students and adults thrive not only in school but in their lives. The SEL skills can be taught from preschool all the way through adulthood. From effective problem-solving skills to self-discipline, from impulse control and management of strong emotions. Besides being able to adjust well in a constantly evolving social environment, children perform better in academics and workplaces.

Today's schools are increasingly multicultural and multilingual with students from diverse social and economic backgrounds. Educators and community agencies serve students with different motivations for engaging in learning, behaving positively, and performing academically. Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides a foundation for safe and positive learning and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life.

The SEL curriculum teaches techniques like

  1. Gaining confidence

  2. Set goals

  3. Decision making

  4. Teamwork

  5. Navigate the world more effectively

These skills help individuals to excel in academics, workplaces and their social lives. It also helps learners enhance confidence in themselves. In addition to this, it helps in creating a healthy and supportive environment. Public health and safety are also improved through SEL.

It is observed that after adapting SEL methods of teaching, students are more likely to attend school, receive better grades, receive a diploma, attend college, and have a full-time job by the age of 25.

In the long run, greater social and emotional competence can increase the likelihood of high school graduation, readiness for postsecondary education, career success, positive family and work relationships, better mental health, reduced criminal behavior, and engaged citizenship.
